HAMILTON, Mass. -- As a flight attendant, Janet Collett is no stranger to waking up in strange hotels at strange hours of the night. She also knows what lulls her back to sleep: tuning into an old movie.

Such was the case when Collett woke up in Washington early in the morning of July 18. But when Collett flipped on the TV, she found not a movie classic, but scenes of a modern tragedy: horrifying pictures of the debris of TWA Flight 800 burning in the waters off Long Island.
