FED: The Matrix blitzes Aussie box office

SYDNEY, April 12 AAP - Sci-fi thriller The Matrix has blitzed the box office, taking $A4.2
million since it opened in Australia and New Zealand on Thursday.

The $100 million film starring Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Ann Moss and Hugo Weaving had beaten
previous smash hits Armaggedon and Mission Impossible, Village Roadshow Pictures Production
said in a statement.

And The Matrix, shot exclusively in Sydney, was the biggest opening April release in the
history of the Australian film industry, opening as the ninth biggest box-office release ever,
Village Roadshow said.

Across America the film has so far taken $US73 million ($A117.04 million).

Over the weekend The Matrix earned $A4,248,806 in Australasia, double that of Reeves'
previous hit movie Speed.

"These results are just phenomenal in both Australia and America and is very exciting for
us," Village Roadshow managing director Graham Burke said.
