Fed: Victim says Amrozi would suffer more in jail
CANBERRA, Aug 8 AAP - Bali bomber Amrozi would suffer more if he spent the rest ofhis life in jail, instead of being executed, an Australian woman who survived the Balibombings said today.
Nicole McLean, who was injured in last October's Bali bombings which killed 202 people, including 88 Australians, said she was disappointed Amrozi was yesterday sentenced todeath by an Indonesian court for his part in the bombings.
"He should suffer the way I have to suffer every day, and the way families that lostpeople have to suffer every day," Ms McLean told the Nine Network.
"He shouldn't deserve a happy ending and that's what, as far as I'm concerned, he's getting."
However, fellow Australian Dale Atkin, who was also injured in the bombings, said hewas relieved the death sentence had been handed down.
"I would have been upset if he only got a life sentence," Mr Atkin said.
"I'm very relieved, I spent a very anxious seven hours yesterday in front of the TVwaiting for the verdict to be handed down."
Mr Atkin said he did not think the death sentence would act as a deterrent to otherterrorists in Indonesia.
"I don't think it's going to have any effect on them at all," Mr Atkin said.
"I think their minds (are) made up that westerners are against Muslims, and they're extremists."
Ms McLean said she would be glad when the trials of other Bali suspects were finished, but the memory of the bombings would always be with her.
"It's more like a chapter in a book, you finish the chapter and move on. It's alwaysgoing to be in that book," she said.
